December 2001

Homecoming

Today we brought Stephen home from the hospital.

After mother and son were both checked-out one last time and both given a clean bill of health, we loaded Stephen into his new carseat and hit the road. I don't believe that I've driven more slowly or deliberately in my entire life. But there wasn't much traffic this Saturday afternoon and we arrived home safely a short time later.

The whole family was very tired and excited to finally be home. And I really think that Stephen is crazy about the fish I painted for him.

Arrival

We were blessed today with the arrival of our first child, Stephen Joseph Smart, Jr.

He was born at Baptist Hospital in Nashville at 8:09 am. He weighed 10 pounds and one once, which was exactly 1 pound off from the estimates we had received last week at his second ultrasound. Now, they had said there was a margin of error of plus or minus one pound, so they were really right on the money.

As you can imagine, our days are now a little more busy than usual, so I haven't had a chance to upload all of the hundreds of digital pictures and movies I've made... yet.

The 2nd Ultrasound

Today we had a second ultrasound and we were all quite surprised to learn that current calculations estimate the baby's weight to be 11 pounds and 1 ounce. After consulting with our doctor, we scheduled a cesarean section for Wednesday, December 26th, 2001. But, don't worry, mother and baby are both doing fine and we couldn't be more excited about this amazing Christmas present.
